Port Gamble Sk’Lallam Tribe (PGST) Hatchery

The landscape for the PGST Hatchery and Beach Shelter weaves the working landscape of a salmon hatchery within long-standing cultural and ecological patterns along the south shoreline of the Point Julia spit. The planting design for the project was developed in collaboration with members of the Tribe and incorporates a community of plants of cultural significance and use. Members of the Tribe also volunteered to restore native backshore plant species in areas of degraded habitat. The project creates a stronger, safer pedestrian connection along Point Julia Drive and organizes patterns of movement to and from the water to allow for the rehabilitation of shoreline plantings and ecosystems. The resulting landscape will create a more resilient interface between Point Julia Drive in an era of rising sea-levels and stronger weather while benefiting salmon habitat in adjacent waters, and celebrating the shoreline as a continued center of Tribal life.
